  1. 2015 Vendor of the Year - Western Trophy

Western_2015 vendor of the year Margene and I model two of the trophies we carry from Western along with their wholesale catalog.

    Dependability, Speed and Teamwork.

That's what sets apart our 2015 "Vendor of the Year", Western Trophy & Sign Supply. With locations in OR, CA, AZ, and CO,  this wholesale awards distributor provides many trophy components to awards companies across the western US.

Western Trophy was nominated for "Vendor of the Year" by both our President, Jeff and our Production Manager, Tom.

Jeff said: "Western has great products and amazing customer service".

Tom said: "I nominated Western because of their great customer service team.  Dan, Kathy, Chris, Brenda, Rod, John, and Megan are always very helpful, knowledgeable, personable, and dependable.  When there are problems, such as product shortages, they always work with me to figure out alternatives. They also patiently accommodate me when my order needs additions or changes."

Western is a main distributor of Plastic Dress Up (PDU) products, which are the main components of most of our sports trophies.  We also purchase many resin awards and medals from Western.

We work mostly with the staff in the Portland, OR warehouse, as that is the location closest to our production facility in Renton, WA.  Just one shipping day away, Western helps us fulfill customer orders quickly and efficiently.

Congratulations to Western Trophy for being our supplier of the year!  Thank you for supplying us with quality products and for the great customer service you give to Trophies2Go every day.

    Cheers,
    Jessica

  2. 2015 Fall Award Trends

Inspired by the recent New York fashion week, here's my biannual update of award trends.  Just like fashion and home décor, trophies and awards offer fresh styles for the seasonal change, with the top award trends for Fall 2015 listed below.

Sterling Teamwork Trophy Engrave office winner's names onto this attractive perpetual trophy.

    Trend #1: Perpetual Corporate Trophies

Customers are asking for a new option in corporate recognition, which is ongoing Perpetual Trophies.  Perpetual plaques continue to be popular, but for something different that can be passed around the office, a Perpetual Trophy makes a popular choice.  Due to demand, we are continuing to develop contemporary styles of perpetual trophies for business, including more formal achievement trophies along with whimsical joke trophies.

Trend #2: Chili Cook Off Awards

Chili trophies continue to be some of our hottest sellers this fall. Whether at the office or with family and friends, everyone loves a cook off and fall is a great time to show off culinary skills with hot and spicy chili. Get my top 8 tips for planning a chili cookoff here.

A great way to fire up the competition at your next cook off is to award both the participants and winners.  Chili trophies, gifts, medals and ribbons make unique, fun and affordable prizes; browse our large selection in our Chili Cookoff Category now!

Square Stone Photo Print This one of a kind artwork is a stone tile with a color photo (our family in Disneyland this June).

    Trend #3:  Color Imprinted Awards

Color Imprinted Awards are a huge trend - bright colors and customization make eye-catching awards!  Using high-tech sublimation, ink is permanently bonded to the surface of the item.  Photo panels, plaques, name badges, clipboards, acrylic awards, and bag tags are just a few of the many items that can be color imprinted.  This trend features vibrant colors for a completely personalized look.

    Trend #4:  Bamboo

Just like last year, bamboo remains one of the hottest wood in awards.  Sustainable and renewable, bamboo's hard surface and pretty honey color make the perfect material for plaques, cutting boards, and even travel mugs!  Beautiful when laser engraved, bamboo awards and gifts are easily personalized.  Great to look at and good for the earth, these awards are a win-win!  Check out all of our eco-friendly bamboo items in our Environmentally Friendly Awards Category.

Mix things up with your awards this fall by picking a trendy piece.  Just like with your wardrobe, adding just one new item can really jazz up your awards program!

    Cheers,
    Jessica

  3. How to Survive Working With Your Spouse

People ask me how Jeff and I are able to work together without killing each other.  Patience, my friends, lots of patience!  No really, it actually pretty easy.  After being married for 20 years, Jeff and I have consistently worked together for about the last 5 years. It has taken some adjustment and finessing, but collaborating with my husband brings me great joy in my work.  Jeff and I have different strengths that complement each other, so we bring out the best in one another.

Below I share my experiences of working with my spouse.  But every marriage/partnership is different, so what works for us, may or may not work for you. If you are thinking about working with your spouse, I hope my experiences can help make it a win-win for your marriage and your business!

    1. Have fun. That's a key ingredient in our marriage, so we bring this to our work. We meet over lunch, check in over coffee, and make each other laugh at our desks. Outside of work we spend quality time together - my favorites are our neighborhood walks, where we have shoulder to shoulder time to connect.

    2. Set boundaries. It has taken practice, but we try our best to keep home at home and work at work.  Of course this doesn't always happen, but we both try to honor this mantra as much as possible.  For example, if we are at the office and one of us starts to discuss the kids' schedule for the week, we will remind the other one to pause the conversation until later that night.  Same with work topics at home - if we need to discuss something work-related at home, we will ask "hey, can we talk about xyz work topic for a minute" and get the other person's permission.  Usually once the topic is complete, the work talk is over.

    3.  Respect the CEO.  Jeff is the President and CEO of our company, and he makes the ultimate decision on the big stuff around here.  However, as a partner in our business, he respects my opinion and if I have strong feelings about something, he will take those into account. As an opinionated person, I may not always agree with what he decides, but I trust him to do what is in the best interest of the company, our staff, our customers and our family.

    4.  Be either all-in or all-out. I have experience with being an equal partner in our business, working part-time in the business without the partnership, and having my own career separate from the business.  I have found that problems came when I worked in the business without being an equal partner. I saw Jeff making decisions I didn't agree with, but I didn't have the authority to do anything about it (other than nag him!).

When I partner in our business, I have a better context and understanding of all moving parts and can make effective arguments to support my position.  And when I wasn't involved in the business at all, that was good too, because I could be a fresh mind for brainstorming,  listening, and encouraging.

    5. Ask when you need a spouse.  Sometimes if I have struggles at work, I need Jeff to listen as my husband, not as my business partner.  This is hard to do, as we are both "all in" the biz. When this occurs, I usually ask "I have this problem, but I need you to listen as my husband, not my work partner." That usually does the trick to have him listen in a supportive, helpful way.

    6.  It's a little financially risky.  Depending on our company for 100% of our livelihood is risky.  All of our eggs are literally in one basket. Growing a business the past few years in an unstable economy has been a challenge. I think it's good to know that and plan accordingly, as this can put a strain on a marriage.

    7. Take Vacations. Having down time away from the business re-energizes us when we return.  It also gives us to a chance to connect as a couple away from work.

Working together has been a lifesaver the past two years while we redesigned and launched our new website. I don't think we could have gotten through this key transition without celebrating the highs together and supporting one another through the lows. Overall, working together has strengthened our marriage by having us focus our energy towards a common goal.  And sure, there are days when we drive each other crazy, but most of the time, we happily work together to execute the mission and vision of our company.

    Cheers!
    Jessica

  4. Trophies2Go Staff Party

To kick off our spring busy season, the Trophies2Go team gathered for a night of bowling and beers to celebrate Cinco de Mayo!  We had a relaxing time of beer, food, shuffleboard and bowling. Teams were "Boys against Girls" and even though two of our girls brought their own bowling shoes, the boys still managed to beat us.

In addition, Jeff presented our Years of Service Awards, which happens each May.  We celebrated each of our staff's contribution to our business, with awards at years 1, 3, 5, and 10.

The big anniversary this year was our engraver Paul's 10th year with Trophies2Go!  Wow, what an accomplishment!

Paul with his 10 year award. Paul with his 10 year award.

Paul is an outstanding engraver because he is extremely meticulous, working hard to ensure accuracy with every order. He has a great eye for design, laying out words in a way that is aesthetically pleasing.  He also works well with customers, creating awards exactly the way the customer wants.  Paul's dependability is second to none, and he is an extremely important person on the Trophies2Go team.  Thank you Paul for your 10 years of service to our company!

Our staff is ready for our busy season to begin!  Bring on the orders!

    Cheers!

  5. The ARA Is Changing!

Our tradegroup, the Awards and Recognition Association, also known as the ARA, is changing with the times.  Just as we recently re-branded Trophies2Go for our new website launch, our trade association, which was founded in 1967, is going through the same process.  Change is never easy, but it is necessary to adapt to new markets and to stay current for customers.

Changes are coming to the ARA! Changes are coming to the ARA!

In order to increase membership, the new name, Awards and Personalization Association (or APA) better reflects the work that member businesses and suppliers do.  The name change is coming soon!

Why does this matter to you, our customers?  At Trophies2Go, our owner Jeff Anderson has served on the ARA board for the past 3 years.  Jeff and I are active members of the association and we find great value in the partnerships with our vendors and other retail members that belong to the organization.  By increasing the APA's membership, this opens greater opportunities for new suppliers, different products, and innovative approaches.  We can learn from new members, hopefully improving our products, our business, and our industry as a whole.

Why does this matter to other awards companies, our competitors?  If you are in the business of recognition or personalization, join the ARA, soon to be APA.  It's a great group of people with amazing collective expertise that you can't get anywhere else.  Yes, it does cost money to join.  But we find that the value we receive from the organization more than makes up for the cost.

Being able to see new products in person is one of the benefits to the ARA show each year. The show is free for members! Being able to see new products in person is one of the benefits to the ARA Vegas show each year. The show is free for members!

The Vegas tradeshow alone is a huge benefit for us, along with the Member to Member forum.  Thanks to the help of forum members, we have been able to find specific products for customers that resulted directly in sales.  I have also attended webinars and other educational events to help grow our business - free to ARA members.  The friendships and relationships we have forged with both suppliers and competitors through the organization are priceless.

We are excited about the change in our trade organization and urge other companies to embrace the new!  If you are in the business of awards or personalization, I urge you to join this collaborative group.  Our industry is rare in that we all work together for the greater good and are lucky to have a trade organization that works hard to increase business for all of us.

    Cheers!
