  1. How Issaquah Observes Veterans Day

    Veterans Day

A time to recognize and celebrate those who have served our country in the armed services. I have found a few local ‘celebrations’ of Veterans Day that I wanted to share.  If you know of more, please add them with a comment below.

    Issaquah Senior Center

The Issaquah Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3436, led by David Waggoner will host a Veterans Day ceremony at the Issaquah Senior Center on Monday, Nov 12th, at 11am.  There will be a Color Guard and all Veterans in attendance will be recognized.  A panel of Veterans (WWII, Korean, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan) will answer the question, ‘What does Veterans Day mean to you?’

There will be a presentation from the Issaquah Historical Society about Carl Albert Larson, the namesake of our local VFW post. The Veteran of the Year Award will be presented and an Honor Guard will present a 21-Gun Salute outside the Senior Center at Veterans Memorial Field.

    Issaquah Schools

ISD Schools are closed on Monday. Many are having Veterans Day Assemblies on Friday the 9th.

At Issaquah High School, students will participate in a program called Cell Phones for Soldiers. Encourage your student to donate any old cell phones and chargers.  In addition you can drop them off at our showroom at 1320 NW Mall Street, A-2, Issaquah. For more information go to www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com.

IHS students will also collaborate to film an all-school video to express their gratitude to Veterans. The video will be available on Friday, Nov 9th to view.  I’ll post a link to it on our Facebook page this weekend so you can see it. www.facebook.com/issaquahtrophy.

    One Young Man’s Request

I received this email today from a friend. She was forwarding an email from a young man in our community who wants to do something special for those currently serving our country.

    Dear friends and family-

As you may or may not know, Veterans Day is a very special holiday in our household as my dad himself was a veteran. He has many times told me how much he loved getting packages and goodies in the mail from his family and even people he did not know. I thought about all the troops overseas currently, and thought that they would enjoy packages as well. So this year, in support of Operation Support our Troops, I am collecting items to send to the troops as I feel that they deserve support as they are the defenders of our country and its freedom and other rights. I did this a few years ago and a lot of people thought it was a good way to get rid of their extra Halloween candy!

Other things Operation Support Our Troops says that our soldiers enjoy: chewing gum, top ramen, beef jerky, nuts, powder drink mixes, hot chocolate, tuna in a pouch. Thanks for supporting our troops, Jack.

If you have any donations you’d like Jack to pass on to our troops, we’ll collect them at Issaquah Trophy & Awards.  1320 NW Mall Street,A-2, Issaquah. For more information about Operation Support Our Troops go to http://www.osotamerica.org/.

    Happy Veterans Day!

    Blessings, Anne

  3. Issaquah Salmon Days Splash Mob

Every October, the city of Issaquah celebrates the return of the Salmon to our hatchery by hosting the Issaquah Salmon Days Festival. It’s a weekend full of fun, food, games, music, art and community pride. This year the Issaquah Chamber hosted a Splash Mob for the month leading up to Salmon Days.  Participants visited businesses to find decorated salmon.  I decided to learn more about my city by 'Splash Mobbing'.  My daughter went with me for most of the visits which made it even better.

Overall, I learned that there are some very creative people in Issaquah.  The salmon were decorated in many ways, from disco ball (Issaquah Family Chiropractic) to no decoration at all (you know who you are.)

Here are my favorite things that I learned:

Someone at Fischer Meats is a big Seahawks Fan.  If you like football and like to tailgate, you need to try their burger patties with the bacon already in.  Oh my!

I wish the Issaquah Coffee Company existed when my kids were young.  They have an awesome play area where your little ones can hang while you relax and enjoy a great cup of coffee.

The State Farm, Tom Sessions, office has some very friendly staff.  I enjoyed talking with them.

There are some really amazing stores in Gilman Village.  My daughter and I had fun walking around there to see Lucky You, Clean Scapes, Issaquah Coffee Company and Palettes and Pairings.

It smells heavenly when you walk into Mint Salon and Spa.

When visiting Adventure Kids, my 11 year old wanted to stay behind to play. That looks like a fun place.   They also now have Sunday hours.

My vote for coolest salmon decoration goes to Pogacha.  Did you know that they have All Night Happy Hour in the bar on Thursday nights. They also have some really fun entertainment scheduled.

Splash Mob Salmon at Pogacha--My Favorite

At Illuminate Contracting, they offer bathroom remodeling as part of their general contracting.

Sterling Bank is the largest community bank in the Pacific Northwest.

Hot Yoga Experience has an October Sauna Challenge.  Check it out!

At Museum Quality Framing I found some great ideas for my son's senior pictures.

The best part of participating in the Splash Mob is that I went into some establishments I might not have tried before.  I know, that's the point.  Next time, I hope there are more participating businesses on the plateau.  I need to learn that area better.

    Enjoy Salmon Days Issaquah!

  4. Volunteering at Susan G Komen 3-Day Walk

This past Sunday, Janice, our customer service manager, and I volunteered at the Seattle Susan G Komen 3-Day Walk for breast cancer.

Komen 3 Day Janice & I at the Seattle Komen 3-Day Walk.

It was a beautiful, sunny  Seattle day with perfect weather for the event. Janice and I were stationed just past the finish line at the Victory T-shirts station. Our job was to hand out t-shirts to the finishers; pink t-shirts to breast cancer survivors, white t-shirts to walkers and gray t-shirts to crew members.

What touched me the most about this event was how moving it was to all who participated. Many of the finishers were in tears, either from the physical feat of walking 60 miles, or from the emotion of dedicating their walk to a loved one. I found myself tearing up often, seeing all of these women and men overcome with emotion. Janice's job was to hand out pink t-shirts to breast cancer survivors who finished the 60 miles. She congratulated each one and gave out many hugs during her shift. One women, probably in her early 20’s, surprised Janice because she was a breast cancer survivor. It's tragic for anyone to have breast cancer, but especially someone so young. Yet these survivors served as an inspiration to us, beating the disease and walking 60 miles to prove the point. What an accomplishment!

Komen Walkers Seattle 3-Day finishers - love the outfits!

The Susan G. Komen's 3 Day Walk is our 3rd quarter 'Awards for a Cause' charity. If you would like to support our 'Awards for a Cause' program, consider purchasing one of our designated products or donate directly to their organization.

This event reminds me to be grateful for my health, my family, and my life. Thank you customers for buying our 'Awards For A Cause' products so we have the opportunity to help those in need in our community. I’m so happy that I spent my Sunday at this worthwhile event.

    Cheers,
    Jessica
