Sports Awards

Sport trophies are our specialty! Read all about awesome sports awards here!

  1. Planning a Team Party

Parties at the end of a sports season are a fun way to celebrate a team’s accomplishments. The common denominator for most team parties is food and awards, with a presentation by the coach. This can be as simple as handing out a cupcake and trophy after the last game or a more involved party at a home, restaurant, school or other facility.

Ensure a Fun Time for the Team

When planning your team party, a few things need to be decided first.

Date and time:  Most parties are held at the end of the season to celebrate your team’s accomplishments. Many teams will celebrate immediately after their final game; ask your coach his or her preference. Then once the date and time are set, communicate that to the other parents as soon as possible.

Venue:  A park, teammate or coach's house, pizza parlor, frozen yogurt shop or other local restaurant are all great locations for a party.  If you choose a popular location, plan ahead to reserve a spot, as many can get booked by other teams.

Food:  The food can be as simple or as fancy as you like. Many teams will hold a potluck at the park or coach's house after their last game.  Pizza is another popular option.  Or maybe its a more low-key affair, and a parent brings cupcakes to the last game.

Awards:  A great way to memorialize the season is to recognize each team member with a personalized trophy, medal, or award.  If your team doesn't want to give participation trophies, consider giving each player a small gift instead, such as a team picture, water bottle, autograph book, or some other memento to remember the season.

If you decide to order awards, choose age appropriate trophies depending on the skill level of your players. For suggestions of awards by age, read Choosing the Right Sports Trophy.

Coaches Gift:   Don’t forget a special acknowledgement for the coaches and team parents as well!  Many of them are volunteers, and it's great for the team to thank them for their time and energy.  Read Coach Recognition for ideas on how to make your coach feel special.

Budget:  If you are planning awards for the team or a gift for the coach,  you may need to collect money from the parents to share the costs.  I suggest pricing out how much everything will cost, then letting the parents know their share.

Presentation:Every player contributes something to the team.  To make your party meaningful, ask your coach to say a few words about each player, whether you give awards or not.  Find one positive contribution from each player and recognize them for it. For ideas how to present a trophy in a meaningful way, read Making Sports Trophies Meaningful.

    Avoiding Common Party Problems

Reserve your venue early. Many popular party spots, such as the neighborhood pizza parlor, get booked quickly with team parties. Check the calendar and call ahead to reserve your team’s space.

Provide plenty of time to order and receive the awards. A little planning will help you stay within your budget and minimize stress. You’ll also save on shipping and rush order fees. Allow at least a week for your order to be completed, more if it needs to be shipped to you.

Confirm the spelling of each player’s name. You don’t want to order an award for “John Smith” when his name is “Jon Smith.” Double check the roster, and if you have questions, check with the player or their parents.

A team party is a great way to celebrate the team and its accomplishments. Here's to another great season!

    Cheers!

  3. What is the difference between a cup and a trophy?

We sometimes get asked the question "What is the difference between a cup and a trophy?".  The short answer is a cup is a KIND of trophy, just like an apple is a kind of fruit, but read more to get the full scoop.

Loving Cup Trophy This traditional Loving Cup Trophy contains a figure top, the golden cup, and then a walnut base with a black brass engraved plate.

The definition of a trophy is: "A cup or other decorative object awarded as a prize for a victory or success".

Trophies are made of two pieces - a top (called a trophy "figure") and a bottom (called a "base").  All trophies have a figure top, which can be a variety of shapes, colors and styles including a cup, a star, a person (such as an Oscar trophy) a sports figure, etc.  To answer the question, a chalice cup can definitely be a figure top, but it doesn't have to be.

The base of the trophy contains the engraved text, including the name of the award, event name, winners name, for example.

There are many different types of trophies, the only limit is imagination!  But Cup Trophies are a classic style that never goes out of fashion and endures the test of time.  Discover our many trophies at our website, including Chalice Cup Trophies!

  4. Thanksgiving Turkey Bowl

    Turkey Bowl!

Now that Halloween is all wrapped up, it's time to look forward to the next big holiday, THANKSGIVING!  And when thinking about Thanksgiving, you can't help but think about FOOTBALL! They go together and you can’t have one without the other IMO!

If football is a Thanksgiving tradition in your family, you can enjoy it two ways:  Watching or Playing.

Watching:  Gather with family and friends, feeling grateful for all of your blessings, then eat until your pants won’t button.   Then after the feast, pass out on the couch watching the epic NFL football battles on TV.  Let the tryptophan do it’s magic!

Playing:  Actually move your body with a walk or activity.  Participate in a local Turkey Trot, such as the one in my community of Issaquah, WA.  Or gather your family, friends, neighbors or co-workers to host a Turkey Bowl!  Play a competitive game of tackle or touch football on Thanksgiving Day or over the long Thanksgiving weekend to counteract that delicious gluttonous Thanksgiving meal.

    Turkey Bowl Plans

So how do you put together a Turkey Bowl game?  Here are some ideas to think about when planning.

Party:  Most people keep their Turkey Bowl competition low-key, as the whole Thanksgiving/Black Friday/Holiday kick off is party enough for that weekend each year.  But if you decide to create a party a great website to get ideas for invitations, decorations, and themes is Party411.

Food:  Play BEFORE eating Thanksgiving dinner – the exercise will work up an appetite, earlier in the day means light and warmer temperatures, and your stomach won’t be totally stuffed, making your players sleepy blobs!  However DO be sure to bring plenty of water to keep your “athletes” well hydrated.

Location: Local schools, a nearby large field, or a neighborhood park all make great locations for your football game.  Make sure to know the boundaries of the “field” so there aren’t arguments later about what’s in bounds and what’s out.

The Ultimate Turkey Bowl competition, white meat vs. dark meat!

Annual Turkey Bowl Trophy:  Your turkey bowl trophy can really be anything unique to your family, just add an engraved plate to customize it.  Some great options include:

    -    Turkey trophies – both a traditional turkey and a goofy turkey

    -    Turkey bowl plaques that can be printed in full color

    -    Our exclusive Turkey Bowl Championship Trophy.  One past customer had turkeys printed on the plate of their football trophy, it was super cute!

If part of your Thanksgiving tradition already includes a turkey bowl, tell us about it in the comment!  Or if you want to start a turkey bowl, give it a try!  And don’t forget the turkey trophy!  Happy Thanksgiving, we have so much to be grateful for!

    Cheers,
    Jessica

  5. Guide to Colors for First, Second and Third Place

This blog post was requested by a customer. She couldn't find anywhere on our website how to choose the corresponding colors for First, Second and Third place. What a great topic and suggestion!

When ordering awards, it's important to know the traditional colors for the places. Use the guide below for the correct colors for the US; Canada is slightly different.

Neck drape and medal colors for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. Neck drape and medal colors for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.

First Place: Gold and blue are the colors that represent 1st place. Gold medals are given to the top finishers at the Olympics and this carries over to the rest of the awards world. Blue ribbons, blue neck drapes, and blue column are also used to represent first place. Think of the quintessential cook off, where the top contestant gets a "Blue Ribbon"!

Second Place: Silver and red symbolize 2nd place. These finishers get a silver medal, as well as red ribbons and neck drapes as a second place prize.

Third Place: Bronze and white stand for 3rd place. Bronze medals are given to third place finishers along with white neck drapes and white ribbons.

Fourth Place: There isn't a metal color for 4th place. For ribbons, it's yellow.

Fifth Place: Again, no metal color for 5th place, but the ribbon color is green.

Ribbon colors for places. Ribbon colors for places.

Here's a table to help remember:

    Place Medal Color Ribbon Color
    1st Gold Blue
    2nd Silver Red
    3rd Bronze White
    4th x Yellow
    5th x Green

I hope this helps with ordering from Trophies2Go!  Feel free to let me know if you have any questions or other blog topics you'd like covered about trophies and awards by commenting below.
