  1. A Moms Opinion Of Participation Trophies

Once again, participation trophies have come under fire in the media. This time it’s Glenn Beck. He makes the argument "...Those who disagree with the practice often point to participation trophies as the 'wussification' of America." Here’s the link to his article.

For disclosure sake, I DO own a trophy company. And our company DOES make money from selling participation trophies. So from that perspective, I’m definitely a fan.

Soccer Pal Who knew this little guy could cause so much controversy?

But my first and most important job is as a MOM of two girls – one kid in elementary school, and one just entering high school. I am at the sweet spot of this argument - an intelligent, engaged parent who makes the decision about giving (or not giving) my kids participation trophies.

If you can take the “owner of a trophy shop” piece out of it, here is how I feel about the issue.

    One Mom's Opinion

Just like Glenn Beck, I don’t want my children to grow up to be entitled lazy brats. As adults, I would like them to be happy, well-adjusted members of society, living on their own and supporting themselves. I don’t want them to feel like they are “owed” anything. I want them to possess a strong work ethic, earning what they want without feeling entitled to anything.

AND at the same time, I think participation trophies are a good thing for my kids. And here's why: I don’t see a participation trophy as something they are entitled to OR something that they have to earn. I see it as a memento of a season, like a scrapbook or a trading coin. A prize they receive for getting off their butts, being healthy, and putting themselves out there.

I see participation trophies similar to souvenirs from a trip. It’s a small thing you keep to remind you of the fun you had and the memories you made. A memento. And if it's given with thought and care, it can become a treasured reminder of childhood.

A small participation trophy, metal or dog tag doesn’t make my kids feel entitled or lazy any more than a party favor from a birthday they attend or a prize from a school event.

That being said, I would agree that large, championship trophies have no place as participation trophies. Tall, multi-post trophies or crystal sports awards are meant for winners that earn them. If you work hard as a team to be the best, you deserve the hardware to prove it.

    The Age Component

I also feel that participation trophies are better for younger children vs. older kids and teens. Young kids who are just starting out their sports or activity careers may be motivated to play with the lure of a trophy at the end of the season. Little kids think they are really cool, more like a toy. In my experience, the trophies will be played with (and sometimes broken) and that’s ok.

Once a kid get into middle school, I don’t feel there's as much of a need for those items any more. By this time, kids will have tried a number of different sports and activities and have figured out what they enjoy and have a natural talent for.

At this older age, a better way to acknowledge participation is with clothing, such as a jersey or sweatshirt, a useful piece of equipment, such as a water bottle or duffle bag, or a picture of the team. At this point in the kids’ career, a pep item for team pride makes more sense than a participation trophy.

I think what makes me the most mad about this debate is when people who don’t like participation trophies say that people who do are codling and harming their kids and our country as a whole. We all want what’s best for our kids and our country, and I believe there can be more than one “right” answer.

There would be no team at all if none of the children had “participated”. If the lure of a participation trophy is the carrot to get kids, especially little kids, involved, then I think they are a good thing. It's all about the meaning you put into the awards - how they are presented, what the coach says about the kids and the season. For tips on how to make sports trophies meaningful, read my past post on the subject here.

If you feel different, I would love to hear your thoughts. And for the record, Glenn Beck, as a mother of two AND the owner of a trophy company, I respectfully disagree with your stand. But I appreciate you putting it out there for us to continue to debate.

    Cheers,
    Jessica

  3. How to Run a Soccer Tournament

I recently interviewed my good friend Todd Johnson, Executive Director of the Pacific Northwest Soccer Club.  Todd organizes and plans the club’s annual soccer tournament, the PacNW Winter Classic.  He shared with me what he has learned over the years about how to run a tournament.  These ideas are specifically for soccer, but can be applied to any sports tournament.

    Organization and Prep

Keeper ID drills Keeper drills at the Winter Classic Tournament.

Step one to getting started is to think through the logistics of the event.  Begin early, as many moving parts take time to coordinate.

Budget – Talk to your board of directors and set a budget for your event.

Fields - Schedule the fields for the event.

Timing and Schedule - Then schedule the games at the fields.  Confirm that no fields are double booked.

Website -This is one of the most important pieces to ensure the success of your event.  With the use of technology and smart phones in our lives today, your website is the focal point to share information to current participants as well as to capture customers for the future.  Basic requirements include registration, the updated schedule, directions, and vendor information.

Vendors -Who do you want at your event?  Once decided, schedule them.  Plan ahead, as many vendors require extra lead time for product creation.

    1.  Trophies – Read below for tips on choosing the perfect tournament trophies for your league.

    2.  Merchandise – T-shirts, clothing and other merchandise needs to be designed and ordered.

    3.  Food Vendors – they can either pay to attend the event and/or give you a percentage of sales.  This can be a money maker for your club.

Lodging - Assign a Hotel/Travel Coordinator. They book the hotel rooms for the visiting teams, and many times your club will get money back from the hotel.

For When Things Don’t Go As Planned…

Buffer - Build in a buffer for everything; plan for excess to cover potential mistakes.  Prepare to go over budget; build in empty spots on your fields and extra timing to cover issues that come up during the tournament.

Expect the unexpected.  One year, one of Todd’s fields was double booked and a high stakes game was going to be cancelled.  Todd decided to move the game to another field and cancel a different game instead.  What he learned is to be flexible, adaptable, check and double check the field schedule to make sure all fields are clear for the event.

    Tournament Trophies

Championship Trophies Winter Classic championship trophies were a hit with players, parents and coaches.

I asked Todd what things to consider when purchasing trophies for a large tournament.

Objectives - As the tournament director, the first step in choosing your championship awards for your event is to figure out your objectives.  Some factors to consider are:

    1.  Size – how large would you like your winner’s trophy to be?

    2.  Cost – what is your budget?

    3. ’Wow’ factor – the trophy needs prestige, to impress

    4. Material – are you okay with plastic?  Or do you prefer metal or crystal awards?

Once you determine what you are looking for, you can begin shopping.

Your Elite Event - A trophy is a unique feel good to what your tournament represents.  For example, the World Cup has an elite trophy that everyone is striving to win.  When you see that award, you automatically associate it with the World Cup.  To win the cup brings prestige!

For your tournament, the goal is to find something unique, something nobody has seen before, so that the award is “your” trophy.  The trophy needs to have a ‘Wow’ factor without being cheesy – so that winners will be proud to display and keep it for years in the future.  The goal is to impress your competitors, your coaches, your kids and their parents so that they will want to come back and compete again next year. You want everyone involved in your tournament to say “I want to win that”!

Participation Awards - For Todd’s event, not only did he give winner trophies, but he also created custom medals for all participants.  The one-of-a-kind medals contained his Winter Classic logo in his club colors.  We created exactly what he wanted for all the players that came to his tournament.  Many clubs also create custom trading coins for their tournaments.

  4. Common Engraving Errors

At Trophies2Go, our goal is to create the perfect award for you to give to someone special.  We take great pride in expertly etching a unique, personalized message on each award we create.  We want the award you purchase to stand the test of time and be a cherished for years to come.

One obstacle we often see in creating a memorable award is engraving errors, especially MISSPELLED WORDS.  We try our hardest to catch these offenders when they come through our website, but sometimes they get missed.  Customers accidentally type the wrong information, or sometimes it’s our mistake – you call your order in, and there’s a typo, for example.

With this blog post, I hope to point out common errors we see in the hopes that everyone, both our staff and customers, double and triple checks the engraving so that it’s error free when engraved onto the award.

    3 Most Common Engraving Errors

How many engraving errors can you find on this phony plaque? It was fabricated specifically for today's blog. How many engraving errors can you find on this phony plaque? It was fabricated specifically for today's blog.

Here are the top 3 errors we regularly see:

    1. Commonly Misspelled Words.  According to our engravers and our customer service team, here are the worst offenders that they see misspelled over and over again:

    Achievement

    Congratulations

    Commitment

    Fantasy

If you have any of these words in the text of your award, use your spell check to make sure they are correct before submitting the engraving.

    2. The Wrong Date.  An order gets repeated from the previous year, yet last year’s date doesn’t get updated.  When you get your order confirmation email, be sure to double and triple check the dates, especially the YEAR, to be sure the date on the award is correct.

    3. Misspelled Names. Often we have to re-make awards because names are misspelled.  To remedy this problem, it’s a good idea to confirm spelling before entering engraving information. For participation awards, double check your team roster with parents before submitting the engraving for your trophies.  For corporate awards, double check the spelling of the winner’s name before placing your order.

Our goal is to create a fun and hassle free ordering experience for our customers.  But unfortunately mistakes do occasionally happen.  When an award is incorrectly engraved, give our customer service team a call at 877-926-4700 to find a solution.  To prevent errors, double and triple check the engraving text when placing your order.  We strive to create accurate and beautiful awards to be enjoyed for years to come!

    Cheers!

  5. Recycling Old Trophies

Your grown child has moved out of the house, and you’re reclaiming his/her room as your own. What do you do with that collection of old, dusty trophies? Here are some ideas of how to give those old trophies a new life.

    Trophy Recycling

Our engraver Mike's box of brass scraps bound for recycling. Our engraver Mike's box of brass scraps bound for recycling.

Unfortunately, the awards and recognition industry does not produce many recyclable trophy components. Most of the trophies we create cannot be recycled and must be either reused or disposed. Hopefully our industry will soon change its ways and reduce waste by offering recyclable products or products made from recycled materials. Until then, we have some suggestions for more utility from your old awards.

    What Can Be Recycled?

Most metal plates that are attached to plaques and trophies can be recycled. Usually these plates are made from aluminum or brass and can be taken to a local recycling center. We recycle all of our scrap metal from plates.

Many solid wood plaques are biodegradable. Our Eco-Plaques and Bamboo Plaques are harvested from environmentally-friendly sustainable forests. These are a great product choice for eco conscious buyers.

    Donation, Donation, Donation

This eco-plaque is made of sustainably harvested cherry and the engraved metal plate can be recycled. This eco-plaque is made of sustainably harvested cherry and the engraved metal plate can be recycled.

Many larger chain thrift stores, such as Goodwill or Value Village, accept donations of gently used awards in good condition. They clean and sell the old trophies to their customers. It’s surprising what creative things people can make out of old awards!

Unfortunately, many smaller thrift stores do not accept trophies. If you have a question, call your local second-hand store before making your donation.

    Reuse Your Old Trophies

If you decide to reuse trophies for another season, the old engraved metal can be removed and recycled. New metal plates can be ordered and easily attached to existing trophies using double sided tape.

    Make Your Own Trophies

If your team is concerned about purchasing products that cannot be recycled, consider making your own awards out of wood or another biodegradable material. At Trophies2Go, engraved plates are available for you to attach to your awards. All of our engraved metal is recyclable.

We appreciate and share your commitment to our environment. At Trophies2Go.com, we strive to create meaningful recognition in an earth-friendly way!

    Cheers!
