  1. Sports Photo Tips

When I read photographer (and friend!) Michelle Enebo's fall newsletter, I knew it was perfect to share with you.   I asked Michelle to"guest blog" this week and she kindly agreed!  She has some great, easy tips for capturing your kids sports season in pictures.  Read below for Michelle's 5 ideas to take better sports photos.

    Quick Tips For Better Pix

Trying to get some fun sports pictures this season?  Here are a few tips for getting better shots.

    1.  Anticipate -  In order to get this shot I had to anticipate Ellie taking HER shot.  It took many pictures before and after just to make sure I got it. (Remember, digital memory is free!)

Michelle Enebo photo Pictures with the coach capture a great game!

    2.  Tell the Whole Story - Yes, it is important to get images of our kids playing the game, but there is so much more to the whole experience.  Don't forget the friendships, the sidelines and the tunnel!

    3.  The Unusual - If you can capture the weird and wacky got for it.  Is there a strange mascot at the football game?  A cool trail at the cross country meet?  How about a lake threatening to engulf the soccer field?

    4.  Equipment - While it is, indeed fun to use my big camera and long lens (I like my 70-200 for sports), I have also used my iPhone to capture the action too.  You DEFINITELY have to anticipate with the iphone because it isn't as quick.  Just know that.

This cute picture tells the story of the season!

    5.  Be Creative - One year Kate tried basketball and I just couldn't get any pictures I liked.  The lighting was horrible and we really couldn't get close to the action.  I decided to set up a shot that would represent the whole season and tell it's own story.

    Get Snapping!

Thank you Michelle for the great ideas!

    Cheers,
    Jessica

  2. College Football Tailgating Awards

College Football is huge in the US.  People are passionate for their teams, whether they went to the school or not.  What is the draw?  What makes College Football so special?  I share my thoughts below.

    My Story

Jeff and friends at a Husky game 20 years ago.

I grew up watching lots of football.  My dad played in college - he was an offensive lineman - and according to family legend, his claim to fame was pummeling Mean Joe Green.  His football career ended early, so instead of playing, he watched football on TV, both college and NFL, and attended most of my high school's home games.  I learned football through osmosis.

I didn't really have any experience attending college games until I enrolled at University of Washington.  I worked for the athletic department, and as a perk, was able to go to the football games for free.  This was during UW's golden years, when Don James was coach.  The games were a blast and Rose Bowl road trips were even better.  Many memories and stories came from those experiences during college, and now the memories continue.

Our Production Manager Tom is a huge Husky fan.  Here he is at the Oregon Game.

    Games Today

Twenty-some years later, college football is less about the game itself and more about traditions, gatherings, and the escape from everyday work life.   Every Saturday home game in the fall, tailgating fans look forward to meeting with their buddies and spending the day with friends, family, and new friends of friends that they will meet.

Besides the actual game, college football Saturdays are about catching up with people you neglect to see because of your busy work schedule and enjoying food and beverages while connecting with others.  Its about playing games with your friends, whether its Beer Pong, Flip Cup, or Bean Bag Toss, and checking out all of the other fans, witnessing and learning their routines and traditions.  The day is capped off with a team that you are passionate about.  Regardless of the outcome win or lose, you can rest assured that many people will celebrate with you or cry with you afterwords. That is the draw of college football.

    Award Ideas

Make some new memories with your tailgating group by getting competitive! I see two areas where adding awards could bring your party to the next level.

    1. Games: Create contests around your tailgating games. We have awesome trophies for Bean Bag Toss, Beer PongFlip Cup, Horse Shoes. Or make your own custom trophy for whatever game your group plays. You can even do a perpetual trophy that can be passed from game to game, year to year, upping the bragging rights!

    2. Cookoffs: Food and beverages is a huge part of tailgating. One idea is to host a cook-off and award your winner. We have chili cook-off, barbecue cook-off, and baking awards that are small, inexpensive, and fun for a winner to get. Consider giving your tailgating bartender a "mixologist" award, or your tailgating host or hostess an award to thank them!

Regardless of your traditions, the game guarantees to be exciting, as young men play for their love of football, not for million dollar salaries. But even more important than the game, Saturdays in the fall are about catching up with friends and family you don't get to see other times of the year and making new memories. Enjoy your team and Go Dawgs!

    Cheers,
    Jessica

  3. How to Get Perpetual Trophy Engraving Done

Last year you bought an awesome perpetual trophy for your fantasy football league.  Now you need to engrave the 2012 winner before your draft.  How do you get it done in a hassle-free, painless way?  We have the perfect process in place to get your engraving done.  It's fast, simple, and very little effort.

The 3 Easy Steps To Getting Your Perpetual Engraving Done

    1.  Unscrew the side plate of your trophy.  Make sure to save the 4 small screws; you will need those to reattach the plate after it's engraved.

    2.  Slide the plate into a small padded mailer with engraving instructions, your contact information and payment .  Usually commissioners put the year, winning player's name and team name on the engraving.  Also include a check for $20.  This is for the cost of engraving and postage.

    3.  Drop it in the nearest US mailbox.  That's it!  So simple!

After we receive the envelope with your plate inside, we will email you an order confirmation and engrave the plate per your instructions.  Then we will mail it back to you.  Be sure to include your address and email with the instructions so we know who to send it to!

Watch our video to see this process in action:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrq3IwYnO0c

Our production time is 3 days, so plan accordingly.  If you need your engraving done sooner, we do have a rush option available for an additional fee.  Just give us a call at 1-877-926-4700.

Once you get your plate back, take it out of the mailer and screw it back onto your trophy.  That's it!  Now you are ready to enjoy your draft and hype another great NFL season!

    Cheers,
    Jessica

  4. Buying Awards Online

    Things to Consider

Being able to buy awards on the Internet has been around for 15+ years. We have been serving our online customers since 2000. In that time, I have learned a thing or two about Internet awards businesses. I've found that there are 3 key things to look for when ordering online from an awards company. They are timing, quality/price, and relationship, and I will discuss each below.

    Timing & Order Turn Around

It's universal: The most important thing to our customers is WHEN will they receive their order. After all, what is the use of getting a good deal on high quality awards if they arrive after the awards presentation? Make sure to choose a company who can get you your awards in time for your event. At Trophies2Go, we guarantee a delivery date based on the shipping method chosen during checkout. The customer knows exactly when their awards will arrive. Below are more tips for timing your awards order.

Order Early! The sooner the order is placed, the better, and the less expensive the shipping will be.  For example, we even have a promotion that allows for free shipping if your order is over $100 and you give us an extra week for production. Many of our repeat customers are aware of this promotion and order well in advance – it is a win-win for all involved when ample time is given.

Choose a product that we can get quickly. We don’t carry every product in our warehouse, and many times have to order specific awards from our suppliers.  However, a couple of our suppliers are local, such as JDS industries and Plastic Dress Up, and we can get awards from them within 24 hours.  This makes the production time much faster than for products from our suppliers at the other end of the county.

If you need your awards within 2 or 3 days, be prepared for expensive shipping. Most shops are happy to accommodate rush orders, but overnight or 2nd day air shipping can be expensive.  At Trophies2Go, we can adjust our production schedule in order to meet tight deadlines, but our shipper is going to be the beneficiary of the extra shipping cost.

If you need your awards right away (24 hours) and cost is a factor, try a local trophy company first.  This may seem contrary to an Internet company making money, but we are in the business of pleasing our customers. Sometimes it’s not worth it to pay $15 for an award and $50 for overnight shipping. Instead look to a local business to accommodate your needs quickly. Even if they charge a small rush fee, you are still ahead of the game.

    Quality & Price

For many people, price is the main reason to buy online.  However, it’s important to consider quality as well.  If you buy a cheap trophy and it breaks right away, it’s not worth the money.

At Trophies2Go, we believe offering quality products at an affordable price is important,  But, there’s another component to a finished award that is equally, or perhaps even more important – engraving. I think engraving is the most important part of the finished award, but it often gets overlooked by the customer.

Choose high quality engraving.  Some Internet retailers use plastic labels for the engraving of medals and trophies. They may also use other methods for engraving acrylic and may surface laser etch their crystal awards. All of these styles provide a faster and cheaper method for marking the awards, but detract from the quality.

At Trophies2Go, we use premium quality brass and aluminum for our trophy plates and engrave them using a process called “diamond drag”. We laser engrave our acrylic awards. We also laser engrave and sandblast our crystal awards for clean lines and flawless etching. This attention to detail and quality engraving materials makes all the difference in the finish of our award.

Use a company that has a good engraver.  There is an artistic component to the layout of the engraving. Not all companies have ultra-experienced engravers and this can be reflected in the quality of the finished product. If you are concerned about how the messaging looks on your award, ask for a proof before the engraving is started. This can save an unpleasant surprise when you open your shipment.

    Relationship

Trophies2Go as the 2012 ARA Large Retailer of the Year. Jeff with the ARA trophy.

Sometimes the Internet feels very impersonal.  It’s hard to have a relationship with a business where you don’t talk with or see the person helping you.  You have to make a leap of faith that if you order a product, it will actually come to you!  Here are some things to consider when choosing to do business with an Internet awards company.

How long have they been in business?  If the company has been around for awhile, it’s probably safe to order from them.  Check around their site for customer testimonials or product ratings for even more proof that they’re legit.

Use Customer Service.  Give the business a call and see how you’re treated.  They should have excellent customer service and a friendly voice on the end of the line.  That’s what we strive for at Trophies2Go.

Are they flexible?  If you’re looking for something special and can’t find it on the website, call or email.  The company should be able to offer suggestions of products to fit your needs or give you another resource if not.

Ask around to see who friends and family recommend. Family and friends are usually willing to share their experiences with you, good and bad.  Use Facebook or Twitter to do this as well.  It’s a safe bet you’ll have a good experience if someone you trust did too.

To summarize, there are a lot of factors that go into choosing an awards company to order from.  If you are looking for a new awards company, give us a try.  We will do our best to provide great products at an excellent value in time for your event. That’s why we are the National Leader of Meaningful Recognition!

  5. Superbowl Sunday Chili Cook-Off

Two weeks until the biggest football day of the year - SUPERBOWL SUNDAY! Want to enjoy the game, the ads, and the half-time show with friends and family? Then throw a party! One idea to heat up the day even more is to host a chili cook-off before, during, or after the game. Chili and Football go hand-in-hand, and a Superbowl party is the perfect opportunity to share yummy food with a little friendly competition.

Below are the must have’s for any Superbowl Sunday Chili Cook-off:

The Chili:  Have your guests bring their chili in a crock pot. At chili cook-offs I host, the rules are you can make any type of chili you want– beef, chicken, vegetarian, spicy, mild, with beans, without beans – pretty much anything goes, as long as it’s homemade. But other competitions have different chili categories and award a winner in each. For ideas of how to plan and judge a chili cook-off, see my previous blog posts.

    Chili Crocks
Make it easy by having entries in crock pots.

Winning Chili Recipes:  Here's my tip of how to win your cookoff:  look on the ICS web site for past chili cookoff winners and their recipes.  That's how we won our cook off this fall; why reinvent the wheel?

The Chili Accompaniments:  Be sure to include the extras for the top of the chili. Shredded cheese, sour cream, diced onions, chopped tomatoes, and crushed tortilla chips are all things that can go on top of chili to enhance the flavor.

The Snacks:  Even if you do a chili cook-off, don't forget the game day snacks. Chips and salsa, guacamole, nachos, cheese or bean dip, garlic bread, and cornbread all go great with chili. Cut up veggies with ranch or even a salad balance out the other junk so at least your guests get a little something healthy. And don't forget dessert! I personally like cookies, brownies, cupcakes - things you can eat with your hands, to keep dishes at a minimum.

The Drinks:  Beer, lots of it.  Conserve fridge space and have a cooler with ice for the beer.

The Awards:  We have lots of different options for chili awards on our web site. But to add some laughs at the party, I’d recommend one of our funnier trophies. Two of my favorites are The Golden Throne  and The Bomb Trophy .

The Message:  Of course any award can be funny if you add witty engraving. Below are some ideas for engraving for your awards, some tasteful, others not so much...

    1. “We Wish You Hadn’t Entered the Chili Cook-Off” Award
(this is the most popular saying for the Worst Chili Award)

    2. “Was That Really Chili?” Award

    3. Honorable Mention
You will be in our thoughts later…

    4. Best Chili Overall
    Mighty Fine Cookin’!

    5. Hottest Chili Award
    Whoa!! That’s quite a fire!

    6. Hottest Chili Award
    It hurts coming and going!

    7. Hot A** Award
Wipe my butt with a snowball please!

    8. Roadkill Award
    Was that meat?

    9. Exhaust Fume Award
    Chili with the most beans

    10. Wild Game Award
    Best of the Beast

The Superbowl is a great excuse to get together with family and friends, and hosting a chili cook-off is sure to bring an unique twist to your party. But no matter what, Superbowl Sunday is all about hanging out with family and friends and having fun (plus the commercials)!

    Cheers,
    Jessica
